Here's your opportunity to see Andy Narell, world-famous steel pan composer/performer, right here in Catonsville! Andy, who currently resides in France, will perform with the CHS Steel Band on Thursday, April 17th, in the high school auditorium at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be available at the door. If your ony experience with our talented steel drum band has been the 4th of July parade, you won't believe the range and talent of these musicians. Trivia: did you know the steel pan is the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century? All other acoustic instruments were invented much earlier. So hope to see you at the concert!

Community News
What a busy week! Hope everyone is well. Bill reported that his wife, Barbara, is home from the hospital. Birthday greetings go out to our friend, Gerhard, in Germany.
The news report today stated that a bagel is a healthy source of protein. Below if the nutritional info on our favorite treat:
Serving Size: 1 medium, 4" diameter
Protein: 9 g
Several customers have noticed a change in the bagels' texture and taste in recent weeks. Andrea reported that the dough is now prepared by a Kosher bakery and a different flour is being used.
Scott is taking orders for Fisher's Popcorn. He will pick orders up in Ocean City next weeked. Proceeds benefit his daughter's basketball team. (Here's Scott sticking his tongue out :P )
Don't forget that you can get tickets at the door next Saturday for a delicious pancake breakfast at the Catonsville Presbyterian Church. Doors open at 8:30 am. Proceeds benefit Jeff's son's boy scout troop. (See info on a previous post).
There will be a community yard sale sponsored by Five Oaks Swim Club on Saturday, April 26th. Table space goes for $20. Don has posted a flyer on Sam's bulletin board for more info.
I am off to Hersheypark for the weekend. Hope someone takes good notes on the weekend's gossip and posts them on the blog!

A Soft Breeze

The blog has added a new international reader in Rio de Janiero, Brazil! Other new readers in Gwynn Oak, MD; Towson, MD; Halethorpe, MD; Los Angeles, CA; New Berlin, NY; Freehold, NJ; Jacksonville, FL; Appleton, WI; Berlin, Germany; and Edmonton, Canada.
Recovery was in the air at Sam's today. Scott was back at work, and Bill W.'s wife, Barbara, is home from the hospital. My family also had a successful first visit to Charlestown races and slots, won big on a two-cent machine! So feeling the luck of the Irish, hope you enjoy the sentiments below.
Some Irish words of wisdom (shared from Stat Counter.com)
Is maith an t-anlann an t-ocras.
Moladh luath agus cáineadh mall. Be quick to praise and slow to criticise.
Tús maith leath na hoibre. A good start is half the work.
Má bhíonn tú ar lorg cara gan locht, beidh tú gan chara go deo. If you seek a friend without fault, you will be without one forever.
Cuir síoda ar ghabhar ach is gabhar i gcónaí é. Dress a goat in silk and it’s still a goat.
Is fearr an sláinte ná an táinte. Health is better than wealth.
And from this day on may you always have these blessings…A soft breeze when summer comes, a warm fireside in winter, and the comfort of a true friend.

The Singing Bagel
You know how people see the image of Elvis in a potato chip or the face of Jesus in a tortilla? Well, Christine Smith discovered "Mr. Bagel Man" one morning and decided that he was singing! So check that bagel carefully before smearing on the cream cheese. You might be able to sell it on eBay. Christine is a digital designer and you can see her other designs at http://christinesmithdigital.blogspot.com/2006/12/singing-bagels.html.Score One For Granny
Tom in Las Vegas shared this video with us.
A lady was video taping her son riding a skate board when her attention switched to an old woman trying to cross the street.
It is the best direct hit I have seen in some time. You can hear the lady taping also giggling as she records the event.
It's a quick one but you will get a good laugh....Watch the guy in the car

Too Much Information
OK, Scott, I have consulted with other speech therapists about your recent tongue trauma. There are many disorders of the tongue that have interesting names: there is hairy tongue, burning tongue, and geographic tongue. There is also macroglossia (enlarged tongue), glossitis (infection of the tongue), anklyglossia (tongue-tied) and diglossia (a bifed or split tongue). You certainly don't suffer from aglossia (no tongue or the inability to speak). However, there is no name that accurately describes your condition. Maybe I am the first to identify "glassyglossia", having a glass sliver embedded in one's tongue.

Edible Art Show/ Pancake Breakfast
Last night, Catonsville High held its annual Edible Art Show. Artists of all ages are invited to submit an entry. The only rule is that all of the materials used must be edible. I was unable to attend last night, but I have been many times in the past. Below are some favorite entries from previous shows.

More Bad Baby Names
Sam's Bagels had a nice comment from author, Matthew Rayback . (By the way, Matthew, congratulations on your new son, very nicely named "Eli ") Matthew and his co-author, Michael Sherrod, have published "Bad Baby Names" at the reasonable price of $9.95. For those of you who don't already know, Dimitri and his wife are expecting a baby in May. Maybe the above book would make a nice shower gift from the bagel bunch? Check out Matthew's humorous and well-written blog at www.badbabynames.net. Below is a sample of one of his blog entries:
Unique? I Think Not
So, here’s an article from an Alberta newspaper about naming trends in Alberta over 2007. A substantial part of the article discusses a variety of “unique” names that popped up over the course of the year. Well, as any good editor will tell you, the word “unique” doesn’t mean “uncommon.” It means “one-of-a-kind.” So I decided to delve into the census records at Ancestry.com to see how many of these names actually were unique. Not surprisingly, almost none of them. Now for you purists, I didn’t look at every single instance of these names, so these numbers are more like broad strokes (okay, for you pure purists, we’ll say broad broad strokes :)). Also, it’s really hard to search for names by gender, so there may be some crossover there too. Either way, unique is not in the eye of the beholder. Take a look (the numbers in brackets are the number of hits in the Ancestry.com census database):
“Among the most interesting names for girls in 2007 were Princess [3,293], Psalms [no Psalms, but 11 Psalm], Rhapsody [4], Oakley [14,779], Kalifornia [none with a K], God’s [9 Gods (none with the apostrophe) and 491 God], Morning Star [3], Evening [116], Elektra [10], Creedance [unique!], Cassiopeia [1], Breaze [2], Blessing [495], Brazil [834], Cerenity [none with a C, 8 with an S], Chaos [28] and Raenbow-Roze [unique! sort of, see below]…
“There was no shortage of uncommon names for little boys in 2007 either. Topping the list is an Adonis [1,789], Blue-Quill [unique!], Corny [267], Felony [11], Furious [7], Geronimo [5,993], Gretzky [unique!], Hinton [5,862], Jackpine [8], Jesus [101, 382, though I’m sure a lot of these are Jesús], Kajun [unique!], Ivy [of course there were a lot of girls named this, but as I scanned the 159,763 entries, I did find a lot of men with this name too], Little [49,875], Maxxamillion [52 with one X], Milwaukee [11], Obsidian-Angel [unique! though there are 60,410 Angels], Rainbow [749], Salmon [8,689], Slim [1,671], Stylez [1], Tao [335] and Zero [896]. There were also three Blazes [723]….”
Unique my eye.
