Resolve to Fight Cancer in 2012

Join your neighbors for the Relay For Life of Catonsville kick-off at 6 p.m., Tuesday,
January 17, 2012, at Matthews 1600, 1600 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD.

Relay For Life is an overnight fundraiser for the American Cancer Society that
supports cancer research and programs in our community. The event will be held
June 9 – 10 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. at CCBC Catonsville.

In 2011, 52 teams of 71 cancer survivors and 426 participants raised $102,511.
Help us reach our goal of having 54 teams with 110 cancer survivors and 500
participants raise $120,000 in 2012.

And speaking of married men, I sent my parents flowers for their 57th wedding anniversary. They had forgotten it was their special day, and wondered why the hell they had received flowers! So we had a good laugh. Next year I'll send a reminder postcard, like my dentist sends me.

'MEET ME IN THE STAIRWELL'

You say you will never forget where you were when
you heard the news On September 11, 2001.
Neither will I.

I was on the 110th floor in a smoke filled room
with a man who called his wife to say 'Good-Bye.' I
held his fingers steady as he dialed. I gave him the
peace to say, 'Honey, I am not going to make it, but it
is OK..I am ready to go.'

I was with his wife when he called as she fed
breakfast to their children. I held her up as she
tried to understand his words and as she realized
he wasn't coming home that night.

I was in the stairwell of the 23rd floor when a
woman cried out to Me for help. 'I have been
knocking on the door of your heart for 50 years!' I said.
'Of course I will show you the way home - only
believe in Me now.'

I was at the base of the building with the Priest
ministering to the injured and devastated souls.
I took him home to tend to his Flock in Heaven. He
heard my voice and answered.

I was on all four of those planes, in every seat,
with every prayer. I was with the crew as they
were overtaken. I was in the very hearts of the
believers there, comforting and assuring them that their
faith has saved them.

I was in Texas , Virginia , California , Michigan , Afghanistan .
I was standing next to you when you heard the terrible news.
Did you sense Me?

I want you to know that I saw every face. I knew
every name - though not all know Me. Some met Me
for the first time on the 86th floor.

Some sought Me with their last breath.
Some couldn't hear Me calling to them through the
smoke and flames; 'Come to Me... this way... take
my hand.' Some chose, for the final time, to ignore Me.
But, I was there.

I did not place you in the Tower that day. You
may not know why, but I do.. However, if you were
there in that explosive moment in time, would you have
reached for Me?

Sept. 11, 2001, was not the end of the journey
for you . But someday your journey will end. And I
will be there for you as well. Seek Me now while I may
be found. Then, at any moment, you know you are
'ready to go.'

I will be in the stairwell of your final moments.

I have big news about my 4 legged kid, Bosco. He successfully passed the tests required to become a Therapy Dog. I had all the confidence in the world that he would but I also had to pass and that was some real pressure but I squeaked through. Only 2 out of 12 passed so we feel pretty good about ourselves. As soon as his certificate comes in the mail we will be going to various nursing homes, retirement homes etc. to help cheer up some folks as well as elementary schools where kids can read to him. I am looking forward to spreading his happiness to others.-------------John

Luna Moth Sighting

Came home from Sam's this morning to find a rare Luna Moth on my front porch. This is a male, with a 4-5 inch wing span. These moths only live for a week, and don't have mouths so they can't eat. They mate in the dark and then die, so I was really lucky to see one in the daylight. He is probably either newly hatched from a green caterpillar, or at the end of his short life.

One day my mother was out, and my dad was in charge of me.

I was maybe 2 1/2 years old. Someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a gift, and it was one of my favorite toys.

Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought him a little cup of 'tea', which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my mom came home.

Welcome Home From China, John!

I returned last week from a great trip to China which could only have been better if Eileen could have gone also, but she could not because of Sjogren's disease . I went there to visit my son, Dtr. in law, and two grandsons who live in Shanghai. It included a side trip to Bejing to see and climb the Great Wall, (for which I received a Chairman Mao cap, an official tee shirt and a plaque, at a small cost) and visit Tienemen Square and many other things of interest. Every day was an adventure and it was a perfect vacation

Some observations:

Traffic is "controlled chaos" Not only cars, trucks and buses, but mopeds, motorcycles, scooters, bicycles, and even carts with two large wheels that looked like they were from the 16th century piled 12-15 feet high with who knows what. These were usually being pulled by a woman while the husband sat in the driver seat. As the old cart went down the street it would be passed by a $500,000 Lamborgini. I also observed a 3 wheel vehicle that was a taxi and could hold a driver and one passenger. It made the Smart car look like a large SUV.

I heard more vehicle horns blown in my time in China than I have heard in my entire life in the US. My life was saved numerous times by my son and dtr. in law as I started to walk when I saw the "Walk" sign start flashing. Pedestrians do not have the right of way and by the end of my trip I was getting pretty good at crossing the street with my head going in every direction at the same time.

The Chinese people are extremely friendly and like Americans. They like the American lifestyle and are quickly grasping it.

Of the thousands of Chinese people I saw in my time there, I doubt if more than 10 of them were overweight. Everyone is active and even the elderly are walking and exercising. The average longevity of the Chinese population in Shanghai is 82.

Most of the foreigners are Asian and European. I met a few Americans but not many.

Shanghai and Bejing seem to have as many Starbucks as there are in Balto. and I saw a few McDonalds and Burger Kings and even a Kenny Rogers ( must be the last one on the planet).

The only beggars I saw were legit. Either double amputees or in very bad shape

My son said the only crime he has observed in his six years there are pick pockets. When someone does commit a crime and is caught he says you usually don't see them again.

My grandson, Harry is six and in the first grade at a private school that teaches Chinese and English. When ,I helped him with his homework it seemed like it was stuff I was learning in the 3rd or 4th grade many years ago. They take education very seriously over there

Something funny---------------My dtr. in law, Thanh, is Vietnamese but she also speaks English and Chinese. One day while my son was at work Thanh and I took off so she could buy Eileen some jade ear rings. We went to many stores before she decided to try another day to find the perfect pair. As we were walking down the street she said, "Papa John, you see these people all stare at us?" Being completely oblivious I said I hadn't noticed. She continued, "They see young girl with old man and they think you my Daddy Sugar" in her Vietnamese accent. Obviously I got a kick out that and when I told my son later he started calling me "Daddy Sugar"

It was a great vacation and I want to especially thank HK, Thanh, Harry & Eddie for being such great hosts.

PS--------I have over 800 pictures in my camera, most of which were taken by my son and as soon as I get them out of the camera and into the computer I will forward some of the best ones.

PPS----I would have sent this sooner but after being up for 30 straight hours on my return trip to Balto. I caught a horrendous cold and was at the doctor's office the next day. I am finally feeling back to normal, whatever that is..

hello sue and averybody from sams bagels i hope everybody is doing great.
i cant believe you post my last email .
i left peru two weeks ago . and i came back to ecuador .
but this time i am in a diferent area.
they call it" THE AVENUE OF THE VOLCANOS" and is because there are several active volcanos
around this little town named salasaca , and is where i am now .
salasaca , is a small town . 4 hours south from quito
and is sorrunded by more than 6 volcanos the most active named TUNGURAHUA
and i am going to be living in this lil town for 2 months .
and i hope i get to see TUNGURAHUA spiting fire ,
WHY AM I GOING TO BE HERE FOR TWO MONTHS ?
well i signed up for a volunteer program that allows me to be here , and teach english and math
to kids , between 5 and 11 is like middle school. and i am really happy doing it .
i am also going to use my skills and experience in construccion to help doing some retaining walls .
and some other things in and outdoor.
kids here are really loving . and is so amazing to be able to work with them .
unfortunately ecuador allows me to be here only for 3 months . so i will have to go out by may
but i would like to stay longer.
and since i am doing this i dont know how long more is going to take me to go back to the us ,
but one thing is for sure ,
i miss my BACON,HAM,TOMATOE.CHESSE ON JALAPEÑO TOASTED BAGEL .(i love it)
i really wish you people could see this here .
but since you can t i am going to do it for you . i will climb volcano chimborazo wich is 6310 m o s l
and from the center of the planet is the highst point of the planet .
i will take pictures and send them to you .

'Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?

'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him. 'All the food was slow.'

'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat? It was a place called 'at home,'I explained. 'Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it :

Some parents NEVER owned their own house, never wore Levis, never set foot on a golf course, never traveled out of the country or had a credit card.

In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.

My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow)

We didn't have a television in our house until I was 19. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a..m. and there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people.

I was 21 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called 'pizza pie.' When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had.

I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you
didn't know weren't already using the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers -- my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which he got to keep 2 cents. He had to get up at 6AM every morning. On Saturday, he had to collect the 42 cents from his customers. His favorite customers were the ones who gave him 50 cents and told him to keep the change. His least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never
be home on collection day.

Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or most anything offensive.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

MEMORIES from a friend :
My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.

Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.
Real ice boxes.
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.
Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.

We landed in Charlotte and drove down to Asheville yesterday. Everyone is having a great time at the reunion. Only weird event was that the hotel assigned another patron to my room at 11:30 pm, and I awoke to hearing the door card click and the door opening. Think both of us were equally surprised!

Biltmore Estates was amazing. Situated on 8000 acres, it features forests, mountains, fields, two rivers and streams. Gorgeous! Dad loved all of the woodworking masterpieces in the house, and Mom loved the relaxing lunch at Deerpark. I loved everything!

The $50 Cucumber

A few weeks ago, a groundhog ate all of the cucumbers off of the plant my Dad had raised from seed. My Dad bought and put up fencing around the plant, whuch had to reinforced several times. He caught and delivered two groundhogs and several squirrels to the state park. And here is the fruit of all his labor.....my Mom calculated that given the cost of the fencing, this is a $50 cucumber! Delicious.

Below is the June schedule for troop arrivals at BWI. Could you post this for all to see. A few people expressed interest. There is a warning regarding the schedule. Arrival times can change at any time so please verify the time before you leave for the airport. Go on line to OWHMD.org or call 410-630-1555 two hours before you leave. Your parking ticket will be validated by a member of the group . Volunteers should arrive one hour before the arrival time in order to put up signs, fill goody bags or do whatever needs to be done. Team Leaders have a store room behind the Air Tran ticket counter. The food and water is loaded on carts, put on the elevator at the end of Air Tran counter and taken to the area where the troops arrive. If anybody is interested, they can follow me down or ride with me.

You never know what you might learn at Sam's. This morning, Harold and I learned that our son, Paul, was enroute to Ocean City! He had spent the night at a friend's, then they decided to get up early and drive to the beach. Stopped by my folks at 5:30 this morning (knowing my parents would be awake) and asked them to let us know where they were headed. Harold and I had stupid expressions on our faces.....

Then people discussed crazy things their grandmothers said to them.

If Dorothy said she didn't have anything to do, her granny said

"Take off your stocking and pee in your shoe".

Her granny also said "Pick up a horse turd and run" if you said you needed some fun.

Harold's Gram told him to "Pat yourself on the ass and yell hooray" when he said he was bored. She was also famous for saying "I'll give you something to cry about".

I wanted to make sure that anyone with a desire to help was aware of the tragedy we recently had in Catonsville. Jessica Moran Lombardini, wife of The Candlelight Inn co-owner Christian Lombardini, died on April 6 at the age of 27. She had just given birth on March 29 to their first child, a son named Gianni Franco, when she subsequently developed complications and was admitted to the University of Maryland Hospital. The exact details are not clear, but she passed away a short time later. A trust fund to benefit their newborn son has been set up at Wachovia Bank at 582 Frederick Road in Catonsville. Christian and his brother Marc, who took over the Candlelight when their father Franco passed away, have been long-time supporters of local causes and solid and reliable business people and advocates in the community. Jessica was not only Christian's wife but the restaurant's banquet manager. I know all of your hearts and thoughts will go out to Christian and baby Gianni in this tragic time.

They're Back!!!!

After several days' absence, the familiar blue napkins are back at Sam's, much to the delight of one of our regulars. Bon appetit!
Gladys made it in yesterday after falling last week and sustaining a lumbar fracture. She is in quite a bit of pain, but came in without a walker ubder her own power, and managed to laugh with us.
The Cluster Map for this blog showing readers has been automatically archived and reset. I was rather sad to see the dots removed from six continents and reset to just two dots now. I truly enjoyed seeing all those dots representing unknown visitors. We have had over 32,000 readers to date.
Don is back from his trip to Florida with his family. It was so quiet while he was away.
Bill T. told his oldest son that another son (previously unknown to the family) would be attending his grandfather's funeral. In perpetuating this prank, he introduced me as this long-lost child's mother at the funeral home! I think Bill should be prepared for paybacks in the near future.

Here is an adorable Easter photo of Alicia's twin nieces, wearing fire helmets (their favorites) and searching for eggs in the backyard. Alicia reported that after their visit (and potty training), she found a line of Easter stickers in the bathroom.

And for the weirdly curious, here is a photo of my brisket scar, caused by accidentally pouring gravy on my leg as I removed a roasting pan from the oven. It now appears in the shape of an "S", so my Sam's friends have dubbed it "Susan's Super Sexy Seder Sauce Scar". Can't wait to invite all of you over to dinner soon!

This is indeed a very exciting program, and I'll explain it by

Q. What is an 'Economic Stimulus' payment?
A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
A. Only a smidgen of it.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a High-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China?
A. Shut up.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.S. Economy by Spending your stimulus check wisely:

* If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will Go to China or Sri Lanka.

* If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs.

* If you purchase a computer, it will go to India, Taiwan or China.

* If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala ..

* If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea.

* If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan.

Instead, keep the money in America by:
1) Spending it at yard sales, or
2) Going to ball games, or

4) Beer or

(These are the only American businesses still operating in the U.S.)

Conclusion:
Go to a ball game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard Sale and drink beer all day!

The Great Catonsville Cow Flop 2010

The event is taking place at Christian Temple on Edmondson Ave in Catonsville. The event is a fundraiser for the Boy Scout's High Adventure trip to Northern Tier taking place in June.

What happens is people purchase a 1x1 square foot “plot” and there are 2000 of these plots sold

On the day of the event a newly fed cow is brought to the field and is allowed to roam around until it poops……………… yes I am 100% serious!

Anyway, if it poops on your plot you win $1500. There will be celebrity judges making the final call.

Tickets are being sold for $10 each. Tickets can be purchased from Troop 306 parents. Also, tickets will be sold at the Catonsville 7-11 on Frederick Road (outside the Beltway) on March 20 and at the 7-11 on Edmondson Ave (the Junction) on March 27.

I am so sorry to report that our dear friend, Jacque, passed away last night at home after his illness. Jacque was a very kind, gentle man with a uniquely funny sense of humor. He didn't say much, but when he joined in, his remarks were often hilarious and to the point. Details of the arrangements will be posted as soon as possible. I keep reflecting that Sam's was the last place in the community that Jacque visited before his final hospitalization. It comforts me to know that he was surrounded by our bagel family when he needed us most. We send our love and prayers to Gladys and her family, and look forward to laughing again one day soon over a cup of coffee. Come back to Sam's soon, where the therapy is free!

Bill W. said the almanac predicts the BIGGEST storm yet in early March, about 40 inches. Folks almost threw coffee and napkins at him.
Gladys is driving by herself to Gilchrist to see Jacque. She is making arrangements to bring him home. Meanwhile, the hospital called her to schedule radiation treatments.......don't know how she is handling all of this, but she sounds well.
Schools reopen 2 hours late today, but there are few shoveled walks. Just too deep and nowhere to put all of the snow. Be safe, everyone.

I will be participating in the 12th Annual Maryland State Police Deep Creek Dunk for the Special Olympics. Last year, a couple of friends had convinced me that it is the right thing to do and that the water wouldn't be too cold. They were right about one thing -- It was the right thing to do!

This year's Dunk will be held on February 27 at 2:00 PM. at Deep Creek Lake behind the Uno's Bar and Grille

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Please help support the Special Olympics. The closer I get to my fundraising goal the warmer I will feel in the water.

Update on Jacque: He remains in Gilchrist Hospice. Gladys thought he seemed a bit brighter yesterday, although he can't get out of bed. He is able to eat ice cream. He may need to leave Gilchrist this weekend depending on his condition, and Gladys is making preparations to bring him home. Gladys is also feeling better from her treatment. Thank you for the prayers, keep them coming.

From our friend, John S., who likes to give us a smile.

The boss of a Madison Avenue advertising agency called a spontaneous staff meeting in the middle of a particularly stressful week. (This is one
pretty sharp boss!)

When everyone gathered, the boss, who understood the benefits
of having fun, told the burnt out staff the purpose of the meeting was to
have a quick contest. The theme: Viagra advertising slogans.

The only rule was they had to use past ad slogans, originally written for
other products that captured the essence of Viagra. Slight variations were
acceptable. About 7 minutes later, they turned in their suggestions and created a Top 10 List. With all the laughter and camaraderie, the rest of the week went very well for everyone!

Jacque has been moved to Gilchrest Hospice. The family is hoping to have him moved closer to home. Gladys has had her final chemo treatment, hooray! She is recovering from that, but remains optimistic and in good spirits, What an amazing example for us all.

Heard tonight that Jack has been moved to the CCU for his care. He is being kept comfortable with medication and was not put on a respirator, the family's decision. He was conscious today. Gladys plans to continue with her final chemo treatment this week. Prayers are welcome.

I spoke with Cindy, Jacques and Gladys daughter', on the phone this morning. I let all her know that the bagel family was thinking of them. Jacques was too ill to have the pacemaker surgery. He was mostly unresponsive yesterday and remains in St. Agnes. His heart function is 10-15%, his lungs have fluid, and his prognosis is poor. Only the family is allowed to visit him in the hospital. Hi everyone, I just spoke with Gladys. Jack was taken by ambulance this morning from Sam's to St. Agnes Hospital. He was admitted and is scheduled to have emergency pacemaker surgery tomorrow around noon. And Gladys is scheduled to have her final chemotherapy treatment next week. Gladys says she hopes to be back soon at Sam's and thanks everyone, especially Harold, for their help this morning.

John S. always sends us something to laugh about.....he says there is always too much advertising at his doctor's office for products and medications, but the one below is the best.

He says his doctor warns that if the light stays on for more than 4 hours, he should call his erectrician!

Jack is home from the hospital and Gladys will soon have her last chemo treatment. We hope your health improves in this new year!

Patty is in the process of getting her new kitchen this week. I know that's exciting.

Pat R. just left for 3 weeks vacation in Florida, however, she decided to fly and not drive this year. She was longing for some warm weather.
